CD Reviews

Well played but to little effect
F. Behrens | Keene, NH USA | 10/21/1999
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This is probably the least (to me) satisfactory of all Galway recordings. Of course it is superbly played...but to what effect? Never has a Galway recording sounded so much like elevator music. The press release refers to this disc as "his long-awaited crossover album." Hmm. Long-awaited by whom, one might wonder. The "pop ensemble" then mentioned is not particularly elegant or impressive in any way, and their vocal intrusion on Track 11 is simply annoying. Mr. Galway may, of course, choose his own selections and/or allow them to be chosen for him. But this is definitely a step down for this master artist. I look forward to his re-crossing over as soon as possible."
Very Pretty

"While I agree that this isn't James Galway's most "virtuosic" CD, I still was glad I bought it...I mean, you can't listen to "deep" classical music all the time. "Un-Break My Heart" is basically a collection of popular music, movie music, etc. James's flute still has that fairy-like, fluttery sound (gorgeous!) and his flute's tone is very suited to most of the pieces he plays. I definitely have some faves on this album-probably the first song "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" is my ABSOLUTE favorite. It sounds very romantic and James really wows us with his seemingly effortless ornmentation. I also loved "Candle in the Wind"-it really "soars" and comes to a wonderful climax. "Time to Say Goodbye" was also sweetly sentimental-once again, really suited to the flute. The only song I really didn't like was "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", since it seemed like the arrangement made the song to "draggy" and disjointed. Too bad, since that is a such a pretty song. But, overall, a good CD-great for relaxing and popping into your CD player for some dinner music."
