CD Reviews

Great opera --- Amazon needs to talk with AEON
David Bowman | New York | 11/10/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"James Dillon's long-awaited opera does is not, like Brian Fernyhough's or Elliot Carter's operas, a disappointment --- it's a terrific step forward for him that may come as a surprise to those who have not heard some of his recent orchestral and piano/orchestra pieces: he has definitely transcended his honorary membership in the "New Complexity" club and moved into a new and translucent (or should that be pellucid?) period.

One caveat: no matter how tempted you may be, hold on for the physical CDs release: the MP3 is marred by 5-second silences between (what should be)continuous tracks --- I thought this sort of boo-boo had been vanquished by technology some time back. Whether AEON (the label) or AMAZON is at fault I can't say; hopefully someone is taking care of this as I type."
