CD ReviewsWilkins' cd features strong playing and superb writing 03/07/1999 (4 out of 5 stars) "Jack Wilkins' cd, Artwork, on the Koch Jazz label, is impressive in many respects, not the least of which is it is his debut. His tenor saxophone playing is rich in the history of the instrument, drawing on many influences, whilst being a clone of none in particular. And his writing (he penned 8 of the 9 tracks) is fresh, varied, and memorable. The opening title track pays homage to Art Blakey, being based on Bobby Timmons' Moanin. It serves as a perfect vehicle for Wilkins to establish his firm command of the languages of jazz and blues, and to show off his robust, modern sound and blazing technique. Other favourite numbers are the up-tempo Lady Bug, which is based on Coltrane's Moment's Notice; El Puente del Momento, featuring some of the best of south Florida's latin jazz musicians; and Hat Trick, a short, humourous, quirky blues. There are three ballads on the cd. Warsaw is beautiful and haunting. Chelsea Bridge is a live version of Strayhorn's composition, and features a lengthy, subtle, and well constructed solo by Wilkins. 12th Rose is a rock ballad that features a lovely melody. The side men on this cd make very significant contributions. The playing throughout is inspired. I have listened to this disc many times and look forward to many more listenings."
