Synopsis

Album Description
Jack Lawrence is a flatpicking guitar powerhouse and this release showcases not only Jack's amazing guitar work, but his smooth, strong vocals as well. The music on this CD reflects Jack's eclectic tastes. Jack visits Bluegrass with the Del McCoury band on the title track. Sam Bush and Jerry Douglas join in on "McKinley Blues" a new acoustic version of an old song about the assassination of President Wm. McKinley. Jack delves head first into roots music covering Mississippi John Hurt's "See See Rider." Hurt's influence can be heard in "Through the Country," a new song by Roger Rasnake. Jack's long time musical partner Doc Watson makes an appearance on the live bonus track "Florida Blues." From Blues to Bluegrass, Folk to Americana, there is something for everybody on I Don't Need the Whiskey Anymore.

CD Reviews

Bluegrass Delight
R. Manning | Georgia | 12/26/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Jack Lawrence's latest album, "I Don't Need the Whiskey Anymore" is an absolute delight. His clear singing voice puts meaning into songs such as "Velma", "McKinley Blues", and the title song, "I Don't Need the Whiskey Anymore." He is joined on this CD by many of the big names of bluegrass music such as Sam Bass, Jason Carter and Doc Watson, but it is Jack's own talent that comes through on every cut.

Jack Lawrence's playing style harkens back to the old-time pickers of the thirties and fourties. It reminds me of the Saturdays I would spend sitting around the TV with my Dad watching the "The Grand Ole Opery", "The Porter Wagoner Show" and "The Flat and Scruggs Hour." My favorite cut on this CD is the old Grandpa Jones classic "Eight More Miles to Louisville." Jack Lawrence never tries to push a song or over do the musical interludes as some artists do. He lets his guitar add to his interpretation of the material. He never lets it over ride the material.

I don't know why Jack Lawrence hasn't cut more albums. I wish he would. He has the voice and the musical ability to outshine many if not most of the biggest names in Country Music today. He is a treasure that should not be overlooked."
