Synopsis
Album Description * The second Jack Cortner big band recording to feature Marvin Stamm! As on the first album, Fast Track, these musicians are among the leading artists in New York's intersecting jazz and studio communities. * Tunes include jazz classics from Herbie Hancock and Duke Ellington; standards from Gershwin, Weill, Kern, Dietz, and Porter; and two blues compositions of Cortner's. "Big sound, big talent, big name stars, and big time entertainment." -- Jazz Improv |
CD ReviewsEncore album, as satisfying as the original James A. Vedda | Alexandria, VA USA | 10/04/2009 (5 out of 5 stars) "It all comes together in a perfect blend - the soloists, the ensemble, and the arrangements. It's almost as if the recording sessions for Cortner's 2006 album Fast Track had continued and produced a second disc. Most of the players are the same, reassembled for sessions in October 2007, May 2008, and January 2009. The 11 tracks offer an assortment of jazz standards and new compositions, all with fresh Cortner arrangements that make them all sound brand new.
Trumpet hero Marvin Stamm solos on every tune, giving him a chance to show off his stylistic range from soft ("Sometime Ago") to swinging (Cole Porter's "It's Alright With Me") to funky blues (Herbie Hancock's "Cantaloupe Island"). Check out the juice he pours into his solo in "Caravan." Other soloists who take full advantage of their opportunities to excel are Jon Gordon on alto, Dave Tofani on tenor, Jim Pugh on trombone, and Bill Mays on piano. As in the previous Cortner release, this album demonstrates that the art of the big band continues to evolve, and lets you experience that process with an hour of great music." |
