CD Reviews

Good, but a tad plain

(4 out of 5 stars)

"I really had no complaints about this set when I bought it on an impulse: I knew Rousset's name from his role as baroque opera conductor, and I figured I couldn't go wrong.

His Goldberg Variations are very good...but he takes twice as long as Gould. On the other hand, I hardly noticed because I enjoyed them so much. The other works seem a little stiff, either from interpretation, or just because they aren't supposed to be Bach's most passionate. Either way, if you appreciate Bach + Harpsichord, I can't imagine you would have too much objection over this four-disc set."

"These 4 discs were first issued separately in the 1990s on Decca's L'Oiseau-Lyre label. I'm not a music critic, but I can tell you that these performances are the Penguin Guide's top choices for these works. The contents: Goldberg Variations, Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue, Italian Concerto, 6 Partitas (BWV 825-830), Overture in the French Style (BWV 831), 4 Duets (BWV 802-805)."
