Album DescriptionJohann Christian Bach (1735-1782), youngest son of Johann Sebastian, became estranged from his famous family about the age of twenty and took up residence in Italy, then London, where he became known as "the London Bach." Once in London, Bach immediately began publishing instrumental music. Although the present set of sonatas first appeared in Paris as Op. 12, they were later published in England as Op. 17, which is how they are commonly identified today. Pianist Anthony Spiri, born in New Jersey, studied in both the US and Europe, eventually receiving his diploma from the Mozarteum in Salzburg, where he was immediately hired to teach. From 1987 to 1993 he was assistant to Nikolaus Harnoncourt and performed frequently with the Concentus Musicus of Vienna. He has made numerous CDs.
