CD Reviews

If you like Rolling Stones or Black Crowes then here it is
Sensitive Lightning | New Jersey, USA | 01/21/2005
(3 out of 5 stars)

"Let me begin my review by saying that the song "Sweet Caress" is by far the best song by an ex-GNR member, including anything from Velvet Revolver. Izzy did a great job with this ballad.

When I listen to Izzy's recent albums (117 degrees, River, and On Down the Road), I haven't yet heard Ride On, I feel it's kind of like listening to Paul McCartney without John Lennon. Izzy needs a hard rock edge to his music, in other words, he needs a Slash or Axl to liven up his songs.

Most of his songs are just too folksy. Too much sliding guitar riffs. It sounds like a southern rock/country album, which is fine if that's the market he wants to cater to. I just really wish he would put some heavy artillery into his songs, something more like Appetite for Destruction where the songs just grabbed you and really got you excited.

This album has four good songs: Monkeys, Sweet Caress, Coke'n, and Lot To Learn. It also includes a cover of the Rolling Stones song "Please Go Home".

Overall, you should get the album just for the song Sweet Caress alone. Otherwise, don't expect another GNR album here, even with Duff McKagan playing bass.

"This disk is great. Tracks 3 through 8 are excellent, as good as anything he has done. Disk highlights include coke'n, sweet caress,on down the road, and the rockers include way to go (perfect keith imitation) and monkeys. It is expensive but worth it."
BEST IZZY ALBUM - AMAZINGLY UNDERRATED!!!!

"***Izzy was to Guns n Roses what Dee Dee was to the Ramones: the heart of the band as far as writing the songs.Every album he has recorded is a good (if not great) example of how good and simple rock can be;This album, On Down The Road, his fifth solo album, is no different. Actually, it is the best he's ever recorded, because it has THE BEST SONG OF THE LAST TEN YEARS on it: Sweet Caress. What a nice song! It is so beautiful! Just as good as Patience, if not better. The album has also other GREAT tracks, like You Betcha (great rocker), Monkey's ("This town is full of monkeys, living in a zoo"), On Down The Road (another great laid-back rocker Izzy-style), Coke'n (yet another good track) and Lot To Learn (this is almost as good as Sweet Caress). And Izzy sings better than EVER!The other tracks are NOT on the superb level of these, but are definetely GOOD, wich makes this album - as HIGH PRICED as it is - a VERY worthy purchase!Oh, if you happen to enjoy good rock, get your hands also on Dee Dee Ramone's album "I hate freaks like you". IT IS SO GOOD, and just like this album, very, very UNKNOWN to pretty much everyone."
