"Hey, so I pride myself on being open-minded about music and enjoy music from ABBA to Napalm Death, but this is the collection of a true connoisseur of music looking way beyond the pop-rock I'm at home with.As befits a friend of Robert Wyatt and an innovator in his own field (the field of surrealist mini-stories), Ivor Cutler has delved deep into the deepest riches of his music collection and come up with nothing predictable (beyond a Robert Wyatt track, of course) and some real odd-balls.The range is the most breathtaking I've ever found on one disk: from the most soulful blues, exhiliratingly complex piano work (Lennie Tristano's Turkish Mambo just blows fuses in my head every time I hear it), African dumming solos, stunning choral music from Arvo Part, Chinese singing, Nina Simone (swoon!): the first time I heard this album I felt like every track introduced me to something thrillingly new I'd somehow overlooked before. This compilation is an absolute gem and if you ever, ever found yourself looking at your CD collection and feeling somehow bored, you need this album. It's like a shot in the arm of the pure magic of music.Thank you, Ivor, and please, please, make another compilation."
