"junho de 1996 a junho de 1997 for me and many 'aplicados discipulos' of the world's greatest musician -composer Hermeto Pascoal will live forever, as Itau Cultural published O Bruxo's "Calendario do Som", 366 compositions, one per day in celebration of the 60th birthday of most genial Hermetao!
Rock musicians take great delight when able to proclaim "I wrote that hit in 15 minutes while I brushed my teeth and scratched my posterior",and variations on that absurd theme they declare,
what is NOT amazing to those who are caressed by the musics of Hermeto is that here are 366 fully realized compositions of ritmic, harmonic complexity, and melodic lines from the most simple to complex as a lovely tapestry composed each day~ full of lyricism in glass approaches, or ritmic and harmonic thunder to wake the gods ~ not a wasted or insincere note , even with leap year offering one more day to "slip" and become banal! .
Itibere Zwarg, almost 30 years as the Wizard's inspired baixista (and , just as the more fabled Jaco Pastorious one of the most unique concepts on the instrument, as well as prolific composer/arranger) has released what I consider possibly the recording of the decade, ANY musical genre.
this 2 CD release features Bere's arrangements 27 of the 366 "days" each composition represents,(with Hermeto himself as guest on 2 tracks , providing solo on his escaleta), a musical vision tempered by his long relationship with O Bruxo, and his own heartfelt musical personality.
The recording features 22 of Brasil's newest generation of remarkable musicians, too many to mention individually, but..
..the ensemble and solo contributions are of the higherst caliber, as one can expect from the most musical people on the planeta! (forgive my over -the-top endorsement as both pride and overentusiasm!)
The CD package itself glorious, with the capa (cover) artwork by Hermeto himself, and small pages of each day's 'lead sheet' that Hermeto composed "daily", I could write a small novela -size review for this cd, but,..better you grab one and see for yourself this is the happy 'truth' I tell!
Ritmos tell of all Brasilian trdition, as established earlier when Hermeto a part of the seminal Quarteto Novo. baiao, marcha, choro , bossa maxixe, samba...traditional ritmos with modern harmonies musica universal as Hermeto says...
An extra treat, Itibere has arranged these compositions not only in the tradition of "hermetiana", but adds the new twist , string arrangements and vocal interludes of incredible chord voicings , a marriage that embellishes the unique musical journeys O Bruxo has allowed all travel.
More stars than in the sky! Do not miss these sounds, Hermetnautas unite and endless gratitude to Itibere for continuing the to keep the spirit of Hermetiana , opening even more doors for us who are passionate for this unique musical marvel!"

"These vibrant young musicians under the auspices of their inspiring teacher and HIS venerable teacher have created a thrilling new mix of traditional Brazilian music and many innovative pan-national ideas, with every kind of instrument and vocalization--a combination of music, art, and poetry--a harbinger of things to come in world arts, I believe!"

"This cd includes some of the latest works (27 out of 365 compositions, one for each day of his sixtiest birthday, that Hermeto composed as a tribute to humanity!) by Hermeto Pascoal and are brought to life by the wonderful Itibere Orquesta Familia which is led by Pascoal's bass player of who knows how many years. The result is an incredibly beautiful yet complex and challenging sort of prog -jazz fusion music with brazilian folk as it's main vehicle. This is not too diferent from Hermeto's past works. The main difference being that this is a much bigger band that includes violins, cellos and various wind instruments that give the music other textures not found in the smaller groups that Hermeto had. The overall effect is of a much more intricate record full of detail. Highly recommended if you like Pascoal's or Itibere's records. Excellent packaging and art work too!"
