Album Description

Since 1978, "Grupo Irakere" has been internationally recognized for its contribution to both jazz and Cuban music. Throughout the years, they have contributed most to the development of Cuban musical folklore. Their fame is rooted in the ingenious employment of traditional Cuban instruments. They maintain a broad fan base of both younger and older generations by revitalizing traditional Cuban music themes, rhythms that go from dizzying carnival beats to the classically symphonic. "Grupo Irakere's" director and pianist, Jose Luis "Chucho" Valdes, has been honoured as one of the four greatest jazz pianists in the world today. This Grammy Award winning group is a collection of stars, after all, it was Irakere that brought to light stars such as Arturo Sandoval, Paquito D'Rivera, Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Carlos Averhoff.

"There are a lot of Irakere compilations out there, and most of them are very different from each other.
This one is not very comprehensive regarding the different stages of the group, but it is comprehensive in the sense of reflecting the band styles perfectly.
There's a lot that has been said about this cuban supergroup describing their sound as a mixture of cuban traditional with jazz and classical. The CBS compilation The Best of Irakere gives more importance to their cuban-latin roots more than anything, but "Toda Cuba baila con... Irakere" gives a much better perspective on the band featuring a version of Scott Joplin's "The entertainer", "Estela va estallar" (by the way, one of the very best compositions by Chucho Valdés) , variations on a Beethoven opera and a Mozart Adagio, and of course their best known piece "Misa Negra"."
