For some reason this likeable comedy was a flop at its premiere, but it has been nicely rescued in this recording of the critical edition. Mariella Devia offers the all-around best singing of the set; she is ably support... more »ed by her colleagues. Enzo Dara's voice is by now best suited to the buffo repertoire in which he's featured here. Conductor Donato Renzetti keeps things movingly liltingly. This is a live recording, with some less-than-optimal microphone placements, and a few startling bumps and thuds, but it captures the sparkle of an opera that deserves another chance from impresarios and audiences. --Sarah Bryan Miller« less
