Product DescriptionIn 1966, musical magic, literally, happened. Producer Phil Spector helped create this monumental album and its eponymous first single; the critics raved (a four- or five-star album everywhere); the single zoomed to No. 3 in England, and ever since its inception, Ike & Tina & Phil's masterwork has been honored and recognized by being inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame and by being named the No. 33 all-time single by Rolling Stone magazine. And now, Hip-O Select is reissuing the album on CD exactly as it was first released in 1969 by A&M Records. The album features not only the exalted "Wall of Sound" version of the Phil Spector-Jeff Barry-Ellie Greenwich title composition, but also brilliant Spector-ized versions of such early Ike & Tina classics like "A Fool In Love," "It's Gonna Work Out Fine" and "I Idolize You." Rounding out the package are stellar takes on the overlooked Holland-Dozier-Holland composition "A Love Like Yours (Don't Come Knocking Every Day)," The Drifters' now-timeless classic "Save The Last Dance For Me," and the Arthur Alexander lament "Every Day I Have To Cry." At the time, the initial lack of success of the "River Deep -MountainHigh" album in the U.S. sent Spector into a somewhat brief, early retirement. But the verdict now is virtually unanimous: This is a classic meeting of producer Spector's Wall Of Sound and some of the most fiery R&B anywhere sung by one of the seminal queens of the genre.
