CD ReviewsFascinating layering of voice colour, and rhythms Ceylonzimt | Australia | 12/28/2004 (5 out of 5 stars) "What a beautiful album! The Idea of North have done it again. (See their website http://www.idea.com.au/ for details on their previous albums, available from many online stores and retailers.) These four people have a canny sense of a a cappella singing, and make many nuances of their own in the genre. They are all either classical or jazz trained singers who have studied voice at university, and the soprano, Trish, composes as well. She writes a few of the songs on this album. The four are a lovely bunch of people who are very personable too, and it appears to come through their music. A cool, jazzy, controlled and summery album, recommended to anybody who enjoys cool, jazzy controlled or summery music, as well as anybody else who has an interest in new styles of music, alternative choral work, and modern Australian artists!" Idea of North - Evidence Clef Dweller | 07/19/2004 (5 out of 5 stars) "Another fantastic album by the A Capello group. Unbelievable that just four voices without any accompaniment can sound so good. A mix of new and cover songs including a great version of 'Isn't She Lovely'. This group is all to underrated and I recommend this album to anyone looking to get away from the OK but very commercial music in the charts today." Jazz Festive Clef Dweller | Missouri | 04/23/2005 (5 out of 5 stars) "I've been involved in jazz singing for the last six years or so and was recently at the Greeley Jazz Festival 2005 in Colorado. The Idea of North came and preformed one night while there and everyone was completely amazed. This group from Australia gave an all-out performance and gave a great concert. Everyone in the audience were young jazz singers, players, and instructors and the majority of them found their singing, jazz, and a capella beyond impressive. They sang many of the songs from Evidence during the concert and the one reaction was simply, "Wow!" It is obvious to those watching them live that Idea of North have a passion for what they do and enjoy it.
Critically reviewing the songs, voice, and style of the new cd, Idea of North presents a very well done cd of jazz. Their harmony is very on tune and precise, their style of vanities of songs, rhythms, and tones add a colorful mixture to the compilation. Their sense for timing is also flawless. This group stays true to the meaning of jazz. If you do enjoy good jazz that makes your foot tap, especially a capella jazz, then I highly recommend this cd. Over 3,000 jazz musicians can't be that wrong can they?" |
