Solid Silver, Available Again

(4 out of 5 stars)
"This CD was first released by Blue Note ten years ago as a limited edition title, and now makes a permanent return to the catalog in the RVG series. "Further Explorations" documents an in-between period in Horace Silver's Blue Note discography. Recorded in 1958, it comes after his "Jazz Messengers" efforts, and before the great band with Blue Mitchell and Junior Cook, which yielded a half-dozen classic albums. However, the music is certainly not middle of the road. Art Farmer and Clifford Jordan are no slouches in the frontline, and songs such as "The Outlaw" and "Moon Rays" have become Silver classics. The reason for withholding a fifth star comes from my opinion that there are easily ten Silver CDs that should be ranked ahead this one. But fans of the pianist will delight in being able to purchase this solid Silver now that is available again."
