CD Reviews

Hooverphonic: Back to their roots!
D. Lynch | MN United States | 10/26/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"My title says it all. After a fairly disappointing release (Hooverphonic Presents Jackie Cane), they seem to have bounced back with a very pleasing single. "Wake Up" is very much in the style of Blue Wonder Power Milk era Hooverphonic, and is a very, very welcome sound for long-time fans like me who were hoping for a comeback. I am not disappointed!

However, the remix of the song, More Sweet Music Mix, is a bit too "commercial" for my tastes. Where the original uses strings and subdued drum lines, the remix focuses more on beat and bass, making it sound like some pop song. It is more up-beat, but in not the most positive way.

Overall, worth the small price. True Hooverphonic fans will have already bought this CD (I pre-ordered it in August), but for new-comers, pass up this single and explore their previous CDs. Blue Wonder Power Milk is easily their finest album, but The Magnificent Tree and A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular follow closely behind. Steer clear of Hooverphonic Presents Jackie Cane until you know if you are a fan of them or not, since it is a bit of a departure from Hooverphonic's usual style."
