CD ReviewsAn incredible voice! Susan Payne | Petaluma, California United States | 02/19/2003 (4 out of 5 stars) "I've seen Brenda Boykin many times at the Cotati Jazz Festival and she is one of my all time favorites. She has an incredible voice and she puts on a fantastic show. Her music and delivery is so unique and she has so much fun with her music and the audience. If you every get an opportunity to see her, don't miss it. This CD is a must for anyone who likes blues, jazz and music in general. It's not the same old stuff! And that voice, . . . . . it is magical! Brenda, please come back to Cotati." Good stuff from an obscure group - some gems amid the rocks Susan Payne | 05/15/2002 (4 out of 5 stars) "Lots of bands say their "eclectic" style doesn't fit a specific genre. Rarely is this true. But Home Cookin', while offering an undeniably urban blusey-jazzy sound, incorporates a little country, a little rock, and a few other "spices" from here and there into this "Afrobilly Soul Stew."
I enjoyed all the songs the first round, but only two made it into my list of songs I'll want to listen to again: - TRACK 2: Mary Anne (Just Plain Mary Anne) - TRACK 3: Brick House in Memphis In fact, Marry Anne has become one of my all-time favorite piano-based, blues-injected jazz tunes. There is an incredible piano riff in the middle that I could listen to again and again in its own right. What's interesting is that these two songs are original, while much of the CD contains remakes. I'm anxious to see Home Cookin' give us another CD of all original stuff. I expect it will be great." |
