CELLO CONCERTOS WORTH HEARING

"The Naxos traversal of Viennese composer Leopold Hofmann (1738-1793) is both adventurous and entertaining. This initial outing of four cello concertos, performed and directed engrossingly by the cellist, Tim Hugh, and the Northern Sinfonia, was followed quickly, logically and successfully by CDs of flute concertos, violin concertos and symphonies. [Let us hope that Naxos will soon delve into the chamber works, as well!]
At any rate, Hofmann was a prolific contemporary of Mozart and Haydn, his output almost exceeding that of the latter, and the quality of his work is both impressive and gracious. Of the eight cello concerti Hofmann wrote, the selection here is a fine introduction. Opening movements are always involving, adagios are hewn with memorable lyricism, and finales sparkle.
Tim Hugh is an admirable advocate of these works, his cello smooth and deep-throated, his direction of the Northern Sinfonia assured and caressingly loving. The recording, full, warm, detailed, does justice to the entire enterprise. Those who enjoy the cello concerti of Haydn and Boccherini will absolutely relish Hofmann.
