CD ReviewsSam Most is smokin' John Chapin | Jackson Heights, NY USA | 03/06/2008 (5 out of 5 stars) "I've been listening to jazz flute players as much as I can over the past year, and this record shows Sam Most at his best. The rhythm section of Joe Puma (guitar), Jimmy Gannon (bass), and Lee Kleinman (drums) do a good job, and the guitar work is especially nice. Because of the rhythm section, this album is definitely enjoyable by the casual listener.
This album really points out the differences between Most & Mann... and in interest of full disclosure, I have to admit that I am a Most guy. His playing is really clean, inside the changes, but most of all it is very melodic. Plus, he plays with so much feeling! Make no mistake: Herbie Mann plays a whole lotta flute here, and he sounds great, but if reviews are for splitting hairs, I'll split this one in the direction of Most." |
