Synopsis
Amazon.com Helen Merrill's post-'50s career was marked by a series of underrecognized LPs before she made a resurgence with Collaboration (1988), a reunion session with Gil Evans. Casa Forte is a 1980 date that finds the ever-wistful Merrill working with small groups of strings and horns in addition to a rhythm section; the result is a quiet, finely calibrated disc that includes excellent versions of a number of Brazilian standards ("Wave," "How Insensitive," "Like a Lover"). Fans of her later work with Ron Carter and Stan Getz will find Casa Forte a must. --Rickey Wright |
CD ReviewsA great Merrill date from 1980! Elmo's Firetruck | Bush Country! | 09/28/2000 (5 out of 5 stars) "This was the follow-up to the great "Chasin' the Bird" LP and is a very strong effort indeed. There is a real "Bossa" feel to the record which harkens back to the "Bossa Nova in Tokyo" LP from 1967, but with much better players and production. Highlights are "Antonio's Song" and the title cut, a great vocal workout. This LP along with 'Chasin' the Bird" showed us that Helen Merrill was back in the US and with a vengence when it was released. Essential for any fan. This "Gitanes" Cd re-release has very few of the "digital" nasties--smooth and very well produced."
