Synopsis

Amazon.com
Even among rap fans, Heavy D has been considered innocuous. He's a bit reminiscent of Will Smith; any nastiness he exudes is eaten up by his goofy demeanor. The overweight lover is back with more of his bumpin' sex grooves, but is it streetwise? That's a different story. Rap has always prided itself on its edge and even a so-called "novelty" like Eminem has the groove smarts to match his persona. There's something about Heavy D that just doesn't cut deep enough. Q-Tip (of Tribe Called Quest) pops up on a track and the moment he says, "Yo," you ignore the lackluster backing; he commands the mic while D seems to disappear into the mix. There is one track ("You Know") that deserves a listen for its skillfully smooth merging of rap with drum & bass sounds. --Jason Josephes

CD Reviews

Off the Hook!!
10/12/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This cd has some tight beats and tenacious lyrics. The Heavy Weight Lover has come up on this one. Waterbed Hev didn't really get me, but this one... I'm still trying to think of a good word for it. But it is definitely a work of art. Keep giving us the beats, Hev. Muchos amor!"
First Heavy D Album I bought in a while...

"It's not a bad album, but it's definitely not a great album either. I bought the album basically on the stength of the "On Point" track with Big Pun and EightballI also enjoyed the "Dancing in the Night" which was an unexpected but pleasant suprise. After that though, most of the tracks are fairly mediocre."
