CD ReviewsUnusual for Garm, but then again it's not really *his* idea Barry Dejasu | Rehoboth, Massachusetts | 04/29/2006 (4 out of 5 stars) "Garm told me about this project when I interviewed him in March. "People kept telling me I should use my voice more and so forth," he said; "this was a good opportunity to...well, just to sing without being difficult about it. Head Control System is Daniel's baby; and even though him and I see things very differently, it was no problem for me to adapt to his way of seeing things. I have a lot of respect for his talent. Besides, I instantly took a liking to his music; I love that kind of music, rock s***, even though it is awful direct to be part of my crooked world."
I personally liked the album; I thought it had quite a lot of diversity and some unusual touches, at times evoking "elements from more straightforward rock, thrash, metal, stuff like that; elements of Meshuggah; it sounds like Mars Volta and Queens of the Stone Age, and mixing it with Daniel's fascination with grunge," as Garm put it. The reason I gave it 4 stars is because some of it felt a little forced, and maybe a little too straightforward...but then again, maybe I'm just spoiled on too much avant-garde and progressive stuff, namely some of the more advanced and (un)usual stuff Garm generally sticks with in Ulver. All in all, this is yet another square on the mirror-ball of talent that sums up Garm. And for those who want to see the rest of the interview, look in the current issue (#51) of Modern Fix Magazine (www.modernfix.com or myspace.com/modernfix)." |
