CD Reviews

Great performances, but the sound quality is not always good

"I was very happy to see this CD come out, as I am a fan of Hazel Scott. The eight 1946 Signature recordings from her "Two Toned Piano Recital" unfortunately suffer from harsh distortion of the higher frequencies. This includes one of her wonderful boogie-woogie pieces, "A Rainy Night in G". I guess the masters are shot. The bass response on these tracks is noticeably improved over the LPs I have purchased on eBay, but the high frequences on the old records don't shatter as much.

Other favorites of mine included on this compilation: I Guess I'll Have to Change My Plans, Idyll, Mary Lou (a tribute to Mary Lou Williams), Love Me or leave Me, and the Brown Bee Boogie. Scott's Julliard training is evident in the several short classical pieces including Chopin's Fantaise Impromptu.

Fans will appreciate this CD despite its occasional sound deficincies."
Hazel will blow you away

"Okay, so here's this girl raised in Harlem, and classical piano is pretty well unheard of in the Harlem of the time, and her mama and gramma are making sure she gets the best education possible--they get her into Julliard at age EIGHT--and what comes out, years later, is this astonishing set of recordings based in not only Hazel's technical ability but in her sheer passion for the transcendent working through her heart and fingers... anyway, you'll love this CD. You can play it in the car when you need to chill out in traffic, or you can cuddle up with your special someone by the fire in the evening...whatever the situation, you will looove Hazel's mastery!"
Amazing playing!

"Hazel Scott's incredible talent spanned across both classical and jazz forums. This CD just reflects part of her style and ability, but it is well worth collecting her music. Somebody saw that talent and created this CD."
