"The slow movement of Op.54, No.3 alone is worth the price of admission. This is equal to the work of the Kodaly Quartet -- and the packaging saves shelf space. There are many reasons to select this issue, including a very low price for two discs, but the main reason is the sheer beauty of the recording and the performance it captures. This is a fine time for collecting Haydn string quartets, thanks to NAXOS -- and issues like this to break up the succession of white spines on the shelf!"
Fun, bright, clear, pleasant to listen to

"Despite the relative obscurity of these quartets, they are an excellent introduction for new listeners looking for chamber music that is pleasant to listen to without being shallow. It is true that, with the exception of a few slow movements, these quartets do not present a serious musical challenge, but nevertheless the Endellion string quartet produces a smooth, brilliant modern sound that's completely on par with today's top standards in virtuosity, ensemble and interpretation. Warmly recommended, if for no other reason than to acquaint people with these witty and lovely works."
Great Bargain

"When double CDs first came out, it was two CDs for the same price as a single full-priced CD. This is two CDs for the same price as single mid-priced CD, making each CD cost less than 6 dollars, a very good deal. However, good deals are only good when the product is great. And these performances are simply magical. The sound is excellent. What more could you ask for?"

"This album is beautiful. The Endellion Quartet is clear, lively, and dynamic, as is the recording. If you like string quartets, or just nice classical music, you will not be disappointed: this is a great recording."
An Irresistible Sextet of Haydn Quartets

"Having this set for some 10 years, I enjoy these performances more each time I play them. If the andantino of Op. 74, No. 1 did NOT influence Beethoven for the adagio of his Op. 18, No. 6, then we have yet another great coincidence of great minds working alike! The musicianship and acoustics of this program combine to capture in these underperformed chamber works the sparkle and clarity that the composer infused them with. A two-fer that would be worth harvesting even for the price of two."
