The emergence of the quartet

"With each increasing opus number (from op. 1 through op. 77 decades later), Haydn kept developing the quartet genre in more depth, invention and profoundness. In these early quartets, there is more of a residual galante-divertimento pleasantness from the mid-18th century than the greater complexity and profoundness found in the later quartets. But, even his simpler quartets like these makes for wonderful music - ideal to play during one's daily activities. Op. 9 has many smooth, serene and delightful movements to brighten the day which are recorded with exceptional style and in quality sound by the Kodaly Quartet on the budget label Naxos.
Usually in life, you get what you pay for ... but once in a while something comes around whose quality and value are far above the price paid. Such are the Haydn recordings of the Kodaly Quartet on Naxos. It is truly great music that consistently receives high marks from major classical reviewers like Penguin Guide and all at a really low price. A tip: for an even greater value get the Naxos multi-disc SETS of Haydn's quartets as opposed to buying separately. Don't hesitate to buy them used from an Amazon Marketplace buyer at an even lower price. I buy 90% of my classical music this way with great success and satisfaction."
