"When I think piano trios I usualy think Beau Arts Trio, but their complete set of Haydn comprises about 7 cds, I did not think that I was quite ready for that many, so I looked about for a sample and found these Eloquence CDs. In the mid 1990s Andras Schiff recorded 8 of Haydns late trio sonatas for Decca, they are now re-released on the Eloquence label.
Haydn's trio sonatas are an extension to the piano sonata with violin accompaniment, a cello is added to enhance the piano's part for left hand, so the piano is clearly the senior partner. It is Schiff's excellent performance on piano, crisp and clear, authoritative, that makes these, ( this is vol 1 of a 2 volume set), such a success. This is not to suggest that his partners, Shiokawa on violin and Peramenschikow on cello are anything but first class. In general the faster outer movements are particularly enjoyable.
I urge you to concider these excellent, bargain priced recordings if you are concidering the Haydn piano trios."

"If you want a sampler of Haydn piano trios, here's a 69 minute disc covering four trios that's just about perfect. The program is varied, ranging from Hob. 12 - Hob. 30, with each work revealing a slightly different aspect of the brilliant composer.
That Andras Shiff is a superb Haydn player is evidenced by his two disc piano sonata survey on Teldec. His is definitely the lead voice on these trios & while I'm not familiar with either violinist Yuuko Shiokawa or Boris Pergamenschikow, who plays cello here, both are outstanding musicians.
I also own the highly esteemed Beaux Arts Trio complete survey of the Haydn trios, the sheer volume of which (43 trios on 9 discs) can be a little intimidating to newcomers to this music. For this reason, the Schiff discs, including its companion, Vol. 2 (see my review) may be a better introduction to this delightful music.
Very highly recommended!"
