"I'd never heard of the pianist but that means little since there are many fine pianists out there who record infrequently or not at all.
These performances are a delight - and the recording quality is close and gorgeous. There's a good cross section of Haydn's ideas presented -- all from a fertile time in Haydn's career.
For many years, Haydn's music has often been ill-served by few performances and fewer recordings. If more people listened to recordings such as this, I think that would not be the case.
Listening to Sauer's performances, one can see where Beethoven got some of his inspiration...Beethoven was still a journeyman composer when most of these were written. These works are a bridge to some of the great works of the piano literature.
