Synopsis

The two LPs that together compose this double-CD package are classic Sweets Edison. The time is tight on each track, with the clop of swing's tempos the prime modus operandi of Edison's bands. With tenor saxophonist Jimmy Forrest in the slender quintet's frontline for both these 1958 sessions, The Swinger and Mr. Swing share what you might consider some creative tension between brawn and relaxation. The laconic tunes are each imbued with lots of relaxed blowing, but Forrest in particular loves a big, mod sound that evinces his own hard-bop leanings. Pianist Jimmy Jones, too, shares dual footings in Swing Era comping and bop-era harmonic constructions, not to mention his crisp phrasing that brings to mind John Lewis. Sweets managed to record scores of sessions that speak to his clear, sweet tone and his economy of phrasing. Regarding these aspects, he was a consummate player to live and play through countless jazz revisions and a few stylistic revolutions. He died of prostate cancer on July 27, 1999, at 83 years of age. --Andrew Bartlett

A must for your Jazz Collection

"If you loves Harry "Sweets" Edison, this cd set is a must for your collection. It's so sad he's not here with us any more."
Harry "Sweets" Edison at his peak!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Most people associate Sweets Edison with his tenure in Count Basie's band (1938-50) or his obbligato work behind Frank Sinatra on the "swingin" sides for Capitol in the mid-50's. But in 1957 Edison moved back to New York for a brief time and formed the quintet you will hear on this set. This ensemble was perhaps the perfect vehicle for his highly original style, honed behind big bands and song-birds, to flourish as a leader. He just might be at his professional peak here showing great technique and a clear tone wrapped around an improvisational style that never strays too far from the melody yet remains inventive all the same. Great stuff."

"This double CD is one of my top five favorites. As the album titles suggest, this is pure swing jazz at its best. Harry Edison is at his best, as are tenor sax man Jimmy Forest and pianist Jimmy Jones. Don't let the sticker price for this collection scare you - this is 5 star music."
