CD Reviews

Impressive debut

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is a nice album with an interesting mix of high energy pop and easy listening ballads. Skaat lacks the toughness and grit of say, a great blues singer, but he has a pleasing, smooth voice and he enunciates every syllable clearly. This is an added benefit if you're trying to learn Hebrew. Most of the pop songs seem like standard fare and a few of the ballads drag, but given the right song, such as the award winning, "Ve'At", Skaat sounds like one of the best ballad singers in the world. Another stand out track is the soaring "Mashehu M'meni", with its strong interplay between vocals and lead guitar. The song's hook is so good that it makes you want to learn Hebrew just so you can sing along with the chorus. Then there is the beautiful "Im Hu Y'lech" which flows effortlessly from beginning to end (the violin interlude is the perfect complement to Skaat's vocals)--a real gem. The musical production throughout is first rate. Skaat is reported to be one of the favorites to represent Israel in the 2009 Eurovision contest. If he does and he is given a song to fit his talents, I wouldn't be surprised if he won the whole thing."
