What could be more authentic than recording Johannes Brahms` symphonies and other famous orchestral works with a Hamburg orchestra in the composer`s home town of Hamburg? The symphony orchestra was formed by Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt in 1945 the world-famous NDR Orchestra later emerged from this ensemble. Schmidt-Isserstedt was considered an old school musician who was brought up in a tradition made up of selfl essness in the face of great music. American critic Harold C. Schonberg certainly hit the nail on the head when he described the conductor`s role: It`sthe conductor`s duty to convey the composer`s message not to present the art of his tailor.
