"This is a fantastic album in that it gives the listener the real roots of the husband and wife duo Brett and Rennie Sparks (a.k.a the Handsome Family). It was back in the day when they were still in a transitional period and finding their musical direction. There are songs that are precursors of their current Carter Family influenced alt.country/folk/whatever you want to call it (Arlene, Water Into Wine), there are songs of the indie pop sound that they left behind (The Last, Giant Ant) and there are some of a sound light years away from anything they sound like now (Gorilla). Even though there is some incongruity with the song styles it offers an interesting road map of the possible directions that this truly talented band could have gone in. All that said "Arlene" is worth the price of the album alone. Truly an instant classic."
