A GREAT "ALL AROUND" COMPOSER

"I usually think of Georg Friedrich Handle as primarily a great composer for the human voice (operas, oratorios, cantatas, etc.). Of course, he was a great Baroque "all around" composer writing masterfully in many musical categories and for various instruments including the transverse flute as this recording proves. These sonatas for flute and basso continuo (Viol de Gamma and harpsichord) are great and, I feel that they should be heard more often.
These sonatas are written in the so-called "Italian Style" (i.e. Correli) consisting usually of two slow movements and two fast. Most of the sonatas in this recording are in minor keys and are played beautifully by Barthold Kuiken playing on a wooden transverse flute which has a beautiful "mellow" tone. Indeed, the sound of this Accent "Plus" recording is wonderful never turning harsh.
If you want to hear "another side" of Handle, buy this disc; it's wonderful!
