Gypsy Schaeffer's anticipated sophomore release, Portamental, demonstrates further evolution of the quartet's forward-looking musical vision and innovative approach to the small group format, re-confirming them as one of today's freshest new sounds. Fronted by trombonist Joel Yennior (also a member of Boston s Either/Orchestra) and saxophonist Andy Voelker, the group is propelled by drummer Chris Punis and bassist Jef Charland. The musicians display virtuosity, sensitivity, and conviction as they take turns exploring compositions by all four group members. From the boppish opener, "Under Construction," to the march-like, "Mummer's Day," the blistering, "Ponus Ridge," and the Latin-tinged, "Faces in the Sand," Gypsy Schaeffer again proves itself a welcome and refreshing addition to the modern jazz scene.
