Here is a guitar disc that brings special delight. The soloist is Jason Vieaux, winner of the 1992 Guitar Foundation of America International Competition, the youngest musician in GFA history to take home the top prize (he... more » was 19 when he did it). He is a brilliant musician, and his mastery is evident on every track of this debut disc. Audiophiles are encouraged to check this recording out as well. The instrument is magnificently present, and the dynamic and tonal gradations Vieaux achieves are registered with breathtaking immediacy; his percussive knocks to the body of the instrument have a particularly startling impact. Every nuance is captured, without undue prominence being given to artifacts like string noise. Vieaux's phenomenal talent and musicality are now a matter of record, and if this CD is any gauge we can expect him to be writing some exciting new pages in the history of the guitar. --Ted Libbey« less

Jason Vieaux is a wonderful classical guitarist, no doubt, but this isn't the great work I was expecting from him. I would have loved to have heard him along with orchestration, but instead what is recorded is classical guitar solo pieces. I really haven't heard the CD quite enough yet, but I'll say it's certainly pleasant.
CD Reviews
An Amazing Recording.....but listen to his new releases, too

"Jason Vieaux, as several other reviewers of this disc have observed, is at the forefront of the next generation of classical guitarists. His musicality is never compromised by a lack of technique (since he seems not to lack anything in technique). The program performed here is very exciting, and shows Vieaux at an extremely high level, especially for someone who at the time was about 20 years old!!! While I implore everyone to acquire this recording, I also have followed Vieaux's career and seen him grow into a far more mature and accomplished player than the one heard in this recording. I highly, HIGHLY, recommend everyone to buy his recordings for the Azica label of the Ponce Guitar Sonatas and "Sevilla - the Music of Isaac Albeniz". If you were impressed with this recording, buy these two and you will experience one of the most musical performances by any classical musician on any instrument!"
The classical guitar CD I seem to always reach for.

"Jason Vieaux is easily one of the best players the world has ever seen. Seriously. Compare him to Segovia or Parkening, and suddenly they don't sound so great any more. John Williams is one of the two or three guitarists whose delivery holds up in comparison with Mr. Vieaux. Add perfect delivery, transparent production, and rare depth of meaning in every note to delightful program choices, and you have a CD you'll want to listen to over and over--and at the price, give as gifts to practically everyone who has ever done something nice for you. If you ever get a chance to see Mr. Vieaux live, do so. His stage performance is as flawless and beautiful as the CD--by far the best player I've ever had the pleasure to experience personally. I see several classical performances every year by heads of reputable conservatories and the like--and none of them comes close in any respect. Buy 10 to start out with."
Excellent

"Great sound. Wonderful use of dynamics and varied tone colors.
Great program. Hope for the future of classical guitar. Eschews speed and flash (although technique is solid) in favor of musical involvement. Passionate playing. If you like David Russell and Marcelo Kayath."
Especially fine repertoire of pieces played with feeling

"Jason Vieaux in this recital deserves the widest possible audience. All the pieces, even by the less familiar names, range from charming to entrancing. And, take it from a former guitar teacher, Mr. Vieaux is right in the top group when it comes to technique, expression, and interpretation. You can't miss with this CD. The opening suite, by Jose Merlin, is almost as much fun to listen to as it is to play on the guitar. You can rest assured, too, that Mr. Vieaux plays it far more nicely than your reviewer ever will!"
Beautifully played

"Jason Vieaux is one of the worlds best guitarists, in this Cd he demonstrates his highly developed technique, with a gift for lyriscism. From the haunting opening notes of Merlin's suite Recuerdos to the sparkling Missioneri by Bustamonte, Vieaux mainains a highly enjoyable, contrasting programme. The highlight of which is possibly one of the very best recorded renditions ever of "Julia Florida" by Barrios, where the performer conveys his love of romantic music in abundence. Other than the trio of Barrios pieces, this programme contains some rarely recorded works. The Krouse variations on a Moldavian Hora is a complex work, which some may find not easy on the ear."
