CD Reviews

Friendship and magic at work

"Crop Circles has been plugged into the CD drive of my laptop for several weeks now. The music both sooths and excites at the same time. Davey has long been a master at the acoustic guitar and has an incredible talent for utilizing all of the sounds a guitar can make. On this disc, he often makes the percussive scratching of the strings and the harmonic overtones of the guitar's vibrations reverberate along with the primary line that he's playing to sound like several guitars being played at one time. Take all of that talent and add the musical joy and passion that both Davey and John bring to every project they are involved with, and the musical stew that they cook up can only be described as the symmetry of friendship at work (and play). This is one disc that should definitely be listened to through headphones or turned up loud on the stereo. They make acoustic guitars sound both otherworldly and of the moment at the same time. Davey's Scottish influences, and John's unique blend of country, blues and pop are a must-hear for both the practicing musician and the fan alike. Definitely on my "desert island" list. What makes it even more enjoyable for me is that I had the pleasure of meeting them recently and they are as nice as they are talented. The "good guys" win! Thanks Davey and John:-)!"
Davey Johnstone is the best.

"When I first became aware of Davey Johstone it was reading the label of an Elton John album (CARIBOU) way back in the '70s. The song was Dixie Lily. Back in those days the entire Elton John band really got it on. I knew Davey Johnstone would make it big someday."
Acoustic passion!

"Crop Circles is acoustic guitar at it's best! John and Davey combine their incredible talents on this album to produce a fine array of catchy songs. The end result is both moving and enlightening. The title cut 'Crop Circles', as well as 'Sacred Path' have beautiful, mystical qualities about them and 'Fat Slag Rag' is a catchy, bluesy number that has become a favorite of mine. What I have found particularly great about this album is that both John and Davey have been recorded as 'right groove' and 'left groove' so that with head phones on you can hear each 'master' at work. All the string scratching and buzzing that make acoustic guitars so endearing have been left on the finished product. They have also added their own guitar thumping and string scraping as well as left a few voice recordings on some of the songs as added effects. This album is raw, passionate acoustic guitar(and mandolin)at it's finest!!"
