Richard Groove Holmes at his Phattest and Phunkiest ! ! !
Eddie Landsberg | Tokyo, Japan | 11/12/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"During the '70s, Richard Groove Holmes got REAL funky. The irony is that most of it seems to have been recorded on smaller labels, and very little of it has seen the light of day. You'll hear lot's of stuff of his from the heavy cookin' '60s, and the Bluesy '80s, but the funkiest chapter of Groove's life, the '70s when he'd be kicking funk basslines on a nova string bass unit, screaming on a modified console with a Moog on top, and accompanied by funky wa wa guitar and sampler's wet dream beats - - seems to be lost in the vaults... until now... sort of...This album features hints of that sound. If you're a straight ahead Jazzer, it may not appeal much to you, but if you're a funk and groove-a-teer, its definitely damn smoking, possibly the funkier-est cuts of his in print. Its not Groove *at* his funkiest, but assuming you haven't heard Groove at his funkiest, The Night Glider may be one of the FUNKIEST Hammond organ albums you ever heard... and if you don't believe me take a quick listen to FLY JACK if you can.Speaking of FLY JACK, if this album tickles your funky check out Jack McDuff's funky Down Home Style... and keep your eyes out in the musty dusty vinyl bins ! ! !"
This is 70's Funk Lounge

"Imagine yourself sipping on a cocktail and smoking
a long cigarrette - dressed in a lime-green suit. This
is the music in the background. At times serious, at times
seriously silly, this is an excellent album of Lounge-Funk.

It doesn't get much funkier. Groove produced a number of albums with lesser known labels during his funkiest period, and most of those recordings were misplaced long ago. This is probably the closest we can get to the sound he was rattling out of his Hammond in those lost records. Although most of the tracks are recordings of Holmes with other bands, (he wasn't the front-liner), they are an excellent sample of the funkified organ groove that made him so famous, the Beastie Boys named a song after him.

This is an excellent album for midnight walks, lounging in a black-lit room with headphones, (with party favours), or dancing by yourself. Makes excellent background music for get-togethers as well - themed or not."
