The "Whitman Sampler" of Groove Collective, to use a Chocola

"I'm never disappointed by Groove Collective, they are one of the most smokin' and sizzlin' acid jazz/hip hop (and they are so much MORE than those labels conjure) groups to come out of the Giant Step scene in the early 90's in NYC. Saxophonist Jay Rodriguez has got to be one of the most underrated players today. A true visionary. My BIGGEST complaint about this album (and hence the Whitman Chocolate Sampler analogy) is that the album's live tracks are fades in and fade outs of songs. You don't get a chance to hear the song grow and develop and resolve, especially with a band of such improvisational masters putting their work on a live recording. Get this album anyway, and buy everything else in their catalog. Forgot to mention Jonathan Maron -- another one of the most underrated bass players of this genre. Man, can he set and hold down a tight groove."
