"The imaginative characteristics of Grieg's "Lyric Pieces", are found in every note that the youthful pianist Daniel Propper plays. Being far from routine Propper's joy of music making is conveyed throughout this recording. From the opening notes of the "Arietta", Propper's deep and sensitive sonorities shape its long yearning phrase line. His broad musical scope and responsive technical facility, allows him to inject the "Butterfly's" rapid passage work with the necessary excitement of the moment. In the same way Propper's performance of "Erotic", defines how a sense of feeling content can suddenly become one of emotional instability. Propper's stunning recording from four books of the Lyric Pieces conveys a deeply personal artistic maturity only found in the finest pianists. His understanding of style and intriguing warmth of sonority is astonishing, allowing him to draw every ounce of poetry from each composition. Overall, Propper gives us memorably lyrical varied and involving performances.
This recording is one that I will relish for years to come, and highly recommend it to those who enjoy the magical miniature compositions of Edvard Grieg.
