Album Description"This sweet-voiced angel, who even wears wings, [is] one of Portland's quirkier offerings and one of its greatest unknown pop treasures." -- Willamette Week "I'm struck by [Grey Anne's] original voice, and by that I don't mean her vocal mechanism but her whole poetic/music/lyrical outlook." -- Musical Oozings Grey Anne's music is a magical thing, inhabiting a realm of landscapes and dreams, heartbreak and rhyme scheme. It's also fraught with emotional contradiction. But such themes are a natural outpouring of musician Anne Adams' unique mix of life experience. A sunny Disney childhood in Florida must have influenced Adams' perfectionist, surrealist stage shows. Yet the ocean landscape of her later Anacortes home, as well as a maritime Newfoundland heritage, tempers her songs with a sense of the sea's bleak beauty, hardship, and isolation. Adams' angelic harmonies blossomed from choral training in a church boarding school; meanwhile, so did her subtly defiant wit and philosophical ambivalence--a backlash against repressive rules that forbade radios and even handholding. One can sense, even in her simplest of songs, that Adams' freedom of expression is hard-fought, overwrought, and dearly cherished. In November 2008, Portland's Greyday Records will release Grey Anne's debut album, Facts n Figurines. Buoyed by ambient loops and layers of the instruments at hand--any combination of guitar, accordion, kalimba, and percussion--the album swoons, pines, rebukes, and absolves, but always with a twist of mysterious, poetic whimsy. Performing since 2002, Adams made her name as the mainstay of sometime-band, sometime-solo-act Per Se. Her unique music and enchanting performances gradually established her as a Portland musical darling, and her upcoming album release was listed among the "Most Anticipated of 2008" in the Willamette Week and Portland Mercury. A unique expression of Grey Anne's quirky outlook and colorful past, Facts n Figurines is a debut album worthy of expectation--a curio case of verbal acrobatics, emotional intimacy, and sonic sorcery.
