It's also fraught with emotional contradiction. But such themes are a natural outpouring of musician Anne Adams' unique mix of life experience. A sunny Disney childhood in Florida must have influenced Adams' perfectionist, surrealist stage shows. Yet the ocean landscape of her later Anacortes home, as well as a maritime Newfoundland heritage, tempers her songs with a sense of the sea's bleak beauty, hardship, and isolation. Adams' angelic harmonies blossomed from choral training in a church boarding school; meanwhile, so did her subtly defiant wit and philosophical ambivalence--a backlash against repressive rules that forbade radios and even handholding. One can sense, even in her simplest of songs, that Adams' freedom of expression is hard-fought, overwrought, and dearly cherished. In November 2008, Portland's Greyday Records will release Grey Anne's debut album, Facts n Figurines. Performing since 2002, Adams made her name as the mainstay of sometime-band, sometime-solo-act Per Se.
