Album DescriptionIn a good concert hall, the marimba resonates: notes sing, chords hum and the maximum emotional and dynamic expression is realized. The high ceilings, huge timber beams and heroic proportions give the Saint Francis Auditorium in Santa Fe, New Mexico, built in 1917, a beautifully clear concert hall sound. I believe we captured this in the recording. There has been no editing or enhancement of the performances or in the sound of the marimba. What you hear is as close as possibleto how it sounded in the hall during recording; clicking sticks, ambient background noise, and all. "Gravity" is dedicated to my children Aaron, 11, and Hannah, 1-1/2, and children everywhere. They have inspired me and kept me young at heart. The composition is hard driving, the mallets in perpetual motion, the difficult yet important left hand accompaniment challenging. "Gravity" combines technical strength and melodic fire. "Suite for Hannah" is a collection of six short pieces that revolve around the leitmotif (the second song), reflecting my joy at my daughter Hannah's arrival in the world. Each piece is intended as a child's song, simply composed and lyrical. "African Spaces" is played on a 1-1/2 octave marimba from Upper Volta in South Africa. Vista Primera #2 is a composition with a Mexican flavor. The "Balinese Sketches" are played on a Gerantang, which is essentially a bamboo xylophone played with rubber tire mallets. Enjoy! Sam Lunt, the artist. (Sam Lunt plays a 4-1/2 octave (plus E) DeMorrow marimba).
