When Louis Marshall Jones first adopted the stage persona 'Grandpa' in the 1930s he was not a grandfather at all, in fact he was barely twenty years of age. 'Grandpa Jones' soon became a renowned and respected performer of 'old-timey' and traditional songs, his youthful faced lined with stage paint, a handlebar moustache pasted on, his flaxen hair tinted grey and a battered banjo in hand. Flash forward three decades and Grandpa Jones made a unique and quasi-psychedelic sight on the Grand Ole Opry, a real grandpa (made up as a 'fake' grandpa) performing fantastic 'traditional' songs (often written by himself).
