Synopsis

Amazon.com
Though it starts off slow, the second album from singer and harmonica player Grady Champion packs a powerful punch once it gets going. Solid songwriting and a steady backing band add strength to "My Rooster Is King," "Troubled Mind" (which features some great drums-and-harp interplay), and "Let Me Be." Champion also does right by his choice of cover material, adapting and updating "Goin' Down Slow" and infusing plenty of energy into "She's Some Kind of Wonderful." Far from restricting himself to a single style, Champion handles traditional stylings ("Roberta") and soul-inflected grooves ("Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City") with equal ease. In a time when there's a dearth of young harmonica players to follow in the footsteps of the great Sonny Boy Williamson and Little Walter, Payin' for My Sins shows great promise. --Genevieve Williams

"This CD has some really nice songs with some really nice grooves. Champion shows his vocal skills on everything from real rockin' soul to some nicely laid down ballads, and his harmonica playing adds just the right flavor. This guy can groove!"

"IF YOU ARE A FAN OF BLUES/ROCK AND SOUL THIS CD AS IT ALL AND IT IS ALL GOOD. GRADY SOUNDS LIKE A YOUNG ROBERT JOHNSON WITH HIS SOUND POWERFUL VOICE. BEST CUTS ARE "DONT START ME TALKNG" OLD SONNY BOY WILLIAMSON SONG ABD "SOME KIND OF WONDEFUL" OLD GRAND FUNK TUNE. THE MOST POWERFUL SONG IS "GOIN DOWN SLOW" WHICH STRESSES THE CONSENQUENCES OF UNPROTECTED SEX. GRADY SINGS AND PLAYS HARMONICA."

"I was very impressed by every aspect of this CD. Champion really shows off his harmonica skills on several of the cuts as well as his fine vocal ability on the ballad "Good as New." His version of "Goin' Down Slow" is very moving. I also think his songwriting is excellent and brings something new to Blues music."
