Album DescriptionIncludes rare, early historical sessions dating back to the late 1930s, with exceptional a cappella archive recordings made in hotel rooms using a single microphone and a portable tape recorder. Also features songs recorded in New York in the early 1940s and recordings from the late '40s, adding double bass and drums. The Golden Gate Quartet is the most successful of all of the African-American gospel music groups who sing in the jubilee quartet style. The makeup of the group has changed over the years; new members were continuously brought in to replace those who had retired or left to join other groups. All recordings have been digitally restored in full respect of their original character. Features studio sessions and excerpts of concerts recorded in churches. Concludes with a telling of the band's history by Orlandus Wilson.
