Synopsis

Product Description
Golden Bear doesn't claim to have the patent on unironic, super-melodic, over-the-top indie rock, but after hearing their debut record, you might find yourself making that claim for them. The musical bombast that is the Bear doesn't require a second or third listen before it sinks in?its melodious roar accompanied by big guitars and bigger drums will take no time to inspire even the most jaded listener to throw off his or her chains of hipsterdom and join in this frenzied festival of triumphant jubilation and optimistic anthems. Golden Bear's debut album features contributions from members of fellow Austin bands Voxtrot, The Black Angels, and Tia Carrera, as well as an unusual pairing of Will Oldham cohort Pink Nasty with Dixie Chick dad and pedal steel legend Lloyd Maines on "The Saddest Songs". Co-produced by Erik Wofford at Cacophony Studios (My Morning Jacket, Explosions in the Sky, The Octopus Project), the record contains the sort of music you might hear on a raucous romp through the forest with a feral friend. This is due to the band?s spontaneous approach to recording it?first recording the basic tracks in a live setting, and then with the help of various friends and foes over the next four months, stacking layer upon fuzzy layer of sonic surfaces to make the album come alive. With one foot in the forest and one foot resting firmly on the rings of Saturn, Golden Bear reaches to the heavens with all its earnest might.

CD Reviews

Five stars, but doesn't do these guys justice
Ian McLendon | San Antonio, TX United States | 09/11/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I love Golden Bear. Let that be said first and foremost, but this album does not do them justice. Seeing them live is the ONLY way to truly experience the Bear.

Pumping your fist with Grizzle to the lyrics of "Ten Thousand Orchestras," dancing around like a mad man with all the loyal local Austin fans, and getting to be RIGHT next to the band as they play your favorite songs off the album and others you haven't heard.

This album is awesome, only a couple of songs do I skip and only then because they're a little too slow for me (Silent Prayer, Lady Soul, and sometimes The Darkest of Days). The rest of the album is perfect for my tastes.

Standout songs: Ten Thousand Orchestras, A Reason To Be Proud, Golden Bear Revival Stomp, Victory is Ours but not necessarily in that order."
