"The harpsichord that Christiane Hasselmeier plays has some punch. In the higher registration, it is a sharp sounding instrument. At the same time, the colors on both ends of the registration are rich and distinct enough to allow the counterpoint to come through Hasselmeier's crystalline articulation. The sound approximates Kipnis's instrument, except not as soft. Those looking for a novel approach to the work won't find too much new here. However, Hasselmeier's playing is steady, with a good amount of tension through subtle rubato. Her choice of observing repeats seems to be random, and ornamentation is very much keeping with the score. This is not to say that this performance is dull; on the contrary, the moods and spirit vary as much as the many different characteristics of the variations. A thoroughly enjoyable performance, and a substantially great one on harpsichord. For a straight-forward recording (in terms of tempi, ornamentation, and such technical aspects), this is a good choice."
