"the Goats are an awesome hip-hop group. Not only do they play their own instrumentals but their music is something you can really dig your teeth into. I especially recommend, "Tricks of the Shade" however. That by far is their best album."
Making hip-hop/rock cool, before it was "cool"

"Blending several genres including ambient free jazz, hip-hop, and an abrasive hard rock groove, the Goats have transcended musical barriers creating a unique and jammin' style. Dueling verses trade-off between seething hip-hop rapping and angry, shouted choruslines. The instrumentation is well composed and interesting, keeping the beat varied and tonal variations plentiful. This band was fusing the seemingly polar opposite styles of hard rock and hip-hop way before it became a fast way to make a buck (see 106.7 KROQ for continuous examples of this), and they have earned their rightful place in line with other pioneers of this sub-genre such as Faith No More, Rage Against The Machine, and others."
