CD Reviews

Gnappy is Funkin' AWESOME!
Darrell "Blues Man" Boger | Kalkaska, Michigan | 02/25/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"First off, I'm a huge fan of these dudes. Buck McKinny's guitar style is insane. Brad Bradburn's bass is killer aslo, not to mention the righteous drums of Kevin Pearson. Marcus Cardwell is just incredible with the licks he's got. I agree with the previous reviewer, Gnappy's first album rocked, but they both hold a special place in my music library. BUY THIS CD (and pester Amazon to carry Gnappy's debut, self titled disc), it's worth the money."
Big fun

"Do you like hip, groove-oriented, funkified jazz? Then this is your record. In spades. More hippy-trippy than MMW, tougher than Galactica or the Greyboy Allstars, tighter than that great Canadian outfit, Metalwood (whom they probably most resemble), with a zaniness similar to the Voodoo Dogs, Gnappy roars out of the gate on their new release--and things only get more highly charged and crazier after that. One of the things that sets this band apart is Kevin Pearson's drumming. In a move somewhat akin to what The Bad Plus did on their brilliant release, These Are the Vistas, Gnappy has shaped their jazzy sound around Pearson's rock-funk drumming. Though he doesn't sound much like David King, he comes out of the same school and gives the band a biting edge. Actually, when I think about it, he reminds me of Gene Jackson, one tough drummer who has livened up many a jazz session. Another thing I really love about this record is that the lads don't take themselves or their music too seriously. This is perfectly shown by the in(s)ane babbling (courtesy of guitarist Marcus Cardwell) in the intro (and subtly inserted throughout and as the outro) to "Alien Propaganda" and in the cop/dispatcher interplay of the intro to "Ice You in the Alley," a brilliant cut that introduces a new subgenre, "noire funk."With Is This a Machine, this Austin, TX, based outfit has released an absolutely stellar disc, brilliantly slashing across musical genres, creating a very attractive funk/jazz that is so new, so different, so spectacular that it is almost beyond category. I can't wait for their next disc. Highest recommendation."

"These guys are excellent, crazy musicians, and they perform a nervous, in-your-face funk as I like it.
I prefer their first album though, not available on amazon but check on the internet!
basically, thumbs up!"
