GG's Final Recording Session...

".
Held just one month before his untimely death, this was Gould's last recording session (2 Sept. 1982).
Richard Strauss--along with Bach, Schönberg, and Hindemith--really spoke to Gould's own personal ethos and aesthetic: lushly late-Romantic but clearly composed with clean lines.
Strauss did not compose much solo piano music, but Gould plays these Mendelssohn-, Schumann-, and Brahms-influenced early salon pieces for all they're worth.
The b-minor Sonata is quite a bravura showpiece with ideomatic piano writing and an octave-dashing finale guaranteed to thrill.
Adieu, bel homme!
