Aleksandr Glazunov (1865-1936) was a very talented Russian composer. Pupil of Balakirev and Rimsky-Korsakov, Glazunov went on to be the mentor of Prokofiev, Myaskovsky, and Shostakovich. Also Glazunov edited Borodin's works after the untimley death of the artist.
Glazunov wrote a great deal of fine music: especially notable are this symphonies and string quartets. A. Glazunov: Symphonies Nos. 5 & 8 Glazunov: Symphony No. 6 / The Forest Glazunov: Symphonies Nos. 2 & 7 Glazunov: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 4 Glazunov: String Quintet; Five Novelettes Glazunov: String Quartets Vol. 2
This disc of Quartets features two of Glazunov's best: No. 3 in G-major "Slavic," and No. 5 in d-minor.
No. 3 is especially notable for its use of eastern-European modalities and dance-steps--mazurka, trepak, polka, krakowiak, and gopak--hence the nickname "Slavic."
