"This collection is beloved among Gladys Knight & The Pips fans. Released in 1974 (and reportedly recorded in a weekend's time), while the group was at the height of its fame. With producer/writer/artist Curtis Mayfield at the helm, Claudine was the soundtrack to the motion picture starrring Diahann Caroll and James Earl Jones. The movie told the story of a black woman struggling to raise her children, keep the bills paid and find love. Mayfield gave the group songs like "To Be Invisible" which described the psychic toll of racism, and "Mr. Welfare" about the insidious ways the system can keep a good woman down. The determined authority of Knight's voice was perfect for these songs. But the strongest tunes dealt with the struggle of loving. The organ intro to "Hold On" sets the tone for a sermon. And Gladys is more than up to the task of delivering one. She is at once Claudine and Claudine's counselor. "You're no different than any other girl," she warns. "You're man is the same as every man in the world...so hold on." The big hit was "On And On", a nitty-gritty stomper, with expert interplay between Gladys and the guys. Listen closely and hear Gladys chuckle with satisfaction as the song fades out. "The Makings Of You" is Gladys at her most tender and sensual. "Make Yours A Happy Home" is a buoyant album closer."
A phenomenal soundtrack....

"....that NEEDS to be re-issued, remastered on CD. I vividly remember this movie and the music from when I was a child growing up in the '70s, and it is one that has stayed with me all these years. I love the movie "Claudine" and I have it on DVD but I don't own the soundtrack. I watch the movie partly just to hear the music.
Gladys, the Pips and the late, GREAT Curtis Mayfield (who had done excellent scores and soundtracks of several black films in the '70s, all wonderfully important and memorable) were a perfect combination. Gladys' vocals captivate you, and Curtis' soulful and heartfelt production of the music is SOUL PERSONIFIED!! I'll take this anyday over the garbage today that is being peddled as R&B. PLEASE...get this soundtrack back out there on CD for us fans of classic R&B to enjoy! I will be the FIRST to buy it."

IN SEARCH OF SOUL..

"Soulful sounds of the late great composer, Curtis Mayfield; who in my most humble opinion was the king of movie soundtracks during the blaxploitation era, ie: Sparkle, Superfly and he continues to add life to current soundtracks like Dead Presidents. During his tenure with the Impression it became clear that his undeniable sound was hear to stay. This album has the funk and soul that only the great Gladys Knight can produce. Her soft hyms and aesthetic harmony give this album a beautiful tone. The theme is accordance with the movie's subject matter, which involves a single black mother of six, who falls in love with a "big ol' teddy bear of a man" the garbageman Rupert, (james earl jones). This was an album of my youth, that I heard constantly; since they played it every six months on NY's channel five, now the property of Fox Television. Searched for this album for about three years until I found it at the bottom of my uncle's vynly collection on Thanksgiving Day 1993. What a joy to hear this "feelgood" album again! Knight has such a "richness" in her song, she can make you feel her pain...The Making Of You is a wonderful love song that makes you appreciate your blessings and kiss your child on the cheek....I am such a fan of the "soul seventies" that I had to have this album and would have continued my search if not stumbling upon it on that fateful day. In a few words this album is about, family, triumph and above all "love"."

"Wow! What can't I say about this artist, this soundtrack, this movie. After 26 years of searching for "Claudine", I recently found it on a cable channel one day after my birthday. What a birthday present.I remember going to see this movie in 1974, about 100 times (no kidding). I finally realized, it was the music that kept drawing me back to the picture show (what we used to call it). I am a Gladys Knight fan; past present and forevermore. The movie was awesome and 26 years later, the storyline still exist.Gladys, thank you for the music down through the years and thank God for the calling He's put on your life. God bless and keep you."
